LANDSCAPING DO’S & DON’T’S

GRASS is the best cover for your septic tank and drain field.  Other plants with very shallow root systems can also be used for landscaping.  DON’T plant trees and shrubs near your septic system.  They will aggressively reach for water. Their roots could potentially break into the pipes that connect the septic system to your home, or penetrate into the drain field perforated pipe holes and clog up your system. DON’T drive or park on top of your septic tank or drain field.  Too much weight atop a septic tank can cause a major collapse and do serious damage.  Driving over your drain field can cause pipes to crack and leak.  DON’T build a wooden deck, pool patio, driveway, or even a room addition over your septic tank.  This can cause damage to the system, and makes proper septic maintenance virtually impossible.  A septic failure will occur, resulting in an enormous expense and inconvenience. DO keep septic tank lids easily accessible.  Install a riser to make septic tank pumping easier.
